Sierra Leone: Amputees Still Waiting for Reparations

Freetown, Sierra Leone, September 2008 -- A particularly brutal hallmark of Sierra Leone’s civil war was the indiscriminate amputation of limbs inflicted on civilians by RUF rebels. The country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommended special reparations for amputees in its 2004 report. But how far have they been implemented?

As the UN Peacebuilding Fund allocated three million US dollars for reparations in Sierra Leone, Salamatu Kemokai of the Independent Radio Network (IRN) and Foday Lansana of Radio Moa in Kailahun looked at what is being done for amputees.
